Nagamine and Johnson combine for 6 RBI as Loggers sweep Eagles

TUCSON, Arizona – The Loggers began their Arizona road trip with a doubleheader sweep of Wisconsin-La Crosse (4-3) on Tuesday. Puget Sound won, 3-2, in extra innings, before taking game two, 10-1.  

Kristi Nagamine and Mckenna Johnson each finished the day with three RBI and three hits for the Loggers (3-11). Amber Popovich and Erica Gott finished with two hits, while Kayla Andrus, Jessica Gott, Haley Gray, and Jaci Young each recorded one hit in the two games.

Puget Sound 3, Wis.-La Crosse 2 (8 innings)

The Loggers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. After Kayla Andrus singled to get on base, Mckenna Johnson put down a sacrifice bunt to move her to second. Jessica Gott then came up to bat, and hit an RBI single to put the Loggers on the board.

The Eagles tied the game in the fourth inning on an RBI double. The two teams kept each other off the board, scattering two hits each, to move into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth inning, Wisconsin-La Crosse scored one run on an RBI groundout.

The Loggers came to the plate in the bottom of the eighth, with a runner on second due to the international tiebreaker rules. Amanda Fehr laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runner, Haley Gray, to third base. Amber Popovich singled Gray home to tie the game, 2-2. Erica Gott was the next batter up, and hit a sharp grounder to the Eagle shortstop, who misplayed the ball. The speedy Popovich was able to round the bases from first, scoring the winning run.

Jaci Young started the game in the circle for the Loggers. She allowed one run in 5.0 innings, striking out four. Erica Gott (1-3) earned the victory, throwing the final 3.0 innings. She allowed one run (zero earned), while striking out one.

Puget Sound 10, Wis.-La Crosse 1

The two teams combined for just one hit in the first two innings, before the Loggers broke the game open in the top of the third. Jaci Young led the inning off, homering to give Puget Sound a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Johnson hit a triple, scoring Erica Gott and Popovich.

The Eagles got one run back in the fifth inning on an RBI single.

The Loggers shut the door on the Eagles in the top of the seventh inning. Puget Sound scored seven runs, including three on a Kristi Nagamine double. Erica Gott, Johnson, Jessica Gott, and Gray also recorded a run batted in, in the inning. Wisconsin-La Crosse was able to get two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Loggers' defense shut them down to earn the victory.

Erica Gott (2-3) earned the win, throwing the first 4.0 innings. She allowed just two hits, while striking out one. Jaci Young earned the three-inning save, allowing one run while striking out two.

The Loggers will next play Denison and La Verne on Thursday, March 17, as they continue their stay in Tucson. The game with Denison will begin at 11 a.m., while the matchup with La Verne is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
