THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Wrapping up their winter training trip in sunny Southern California, the Puget Sound Loggers took first in both the men's and women's standings at the Cal Lutheran Relays on Wednesday in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
The Loggers started the meet off in fine fashion as they took the top two spots in the women's 400yd individual medley relay. The top team of MacKenzie Giusti (Walla Walla, Wash.), Jessie Kuwada (Bellevue, Wash./Sammamish), Tracy Wormwood (Elk River, Minn.) and Ann Barrington (Lake Oswego, Ore.) swam the race in 4:25.00 to edge out the other Logger squad by just under two seconds. The Logger men took second, finishing about five seconds behind Colorado College in the men's race.
In the women's 150yd freestyle relay, the Loggers again took first place as the team of Katie Barton (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly), Hally Roberts (Boulder, Colo./Kenyon) and Ava Williams (Eagle Rive, Alaska/Chugiak) won by about a half-second with a time of 1:17.59. The Logger men again took second, this time just eight one-hundredths of a second behind Whitman.
The Logger women took second in the 150yd butterfly relay but the Logger men were victorious as the team of Jackson Kowalski (Keizer, Ore./McNary), Aleksander Jeremic (Skopje, Macedonia/Nova) and Garrett Shields (Roseburg, Ore.) swam the race in 1:12.00.
The Puget Sound women again reigned victorious in the 150yd backstroke relay as Kenzie Kitson (Durango, Colo.), Roberts and Kuwada combined to go 1:26.52. The Logger men were also victorious as the team of Adam Ganz (Cleveland, Ohio/Beachwood), Kowalski and Zachary Walker (Portland, Ore./Grant) recorded a time of 1:19.08.
In the final 150yd relays of the meet, the Logger women took first in the backstroke as Sierra Phillips (Cottonwood Heights, Utah/Brighton), Jessica Jaynes (Denver, Colo./East) and Wormwood finished in 1:39.70 to defeat host Cal Lutheran but just one-hundredth of a second. On the men's side, the Loggers took second to the team from Colorado College.
In the final event of the meet, the Logger women's team of Roberts, Barton, Williams and Mac MacAfee (Los Gatos, Calif.) took first in the 500yd freestyle relay with a time of 4:52.38 to clinch the team victory for Puget Sound. The Logger men also were winners in the final race as Christopher Daly (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly), Ganz, Maxwell Cohen (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva) and Jeremic swam the 500-yard race in 4:21.26.
The Logger women took first in the team standings with 416 points, followed by Cal Lutheran (320), Whitman (308), Lewis & Clark (274) and Colorado College (230).
On the men's side, the Loggers took first with 355 points, followed by Whitman (340), Colorado College (310), Lewis & Clark (284) and Cal Lutheran (213).
Puget Sound resumes the Northwest Conference season on Saturday afternoon when they travel down to Forest Grove, Ore. to take on Pacific. The start of the meet with the Boxers is set for 1:00 pm at Forest Grove Aquatic Center.
