WALLA WALLA, Wash. - A disqualification in the final event of the meet was enough to allow the Whitman Missionaries men to upset the Puget Sound Loggers by just one point but the Logger women made it look easy, putting together a nearly hundred point victory in a Northwest Conference swim meet on Friday in Walla Walla, Wash.
Swimming in the newest facility in the Northwest Conference, the Logger women opened the meet by improving their seed time the 400yd medley relay, winning with a time of 4:08.95. The Logger men also were victorious in the opening event, winning with a time of 3:40.34.
Freshman Ann Barrington (Lake Oswego, Ore.) led a one-two-three finish in the 1000yd freestyle with a time of 11:25.44. Senior Elizabeth MacAfee (Los Gatos, Calif.) followed that up with a win in the 200yd freestyle while Katie Barton (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) won the 50yd freestyle with a time of 25.32.
Jackson Kowalski (Keizer, Ore./McNary) collected the Puget Sound men's first individual win in the 200yd individual medley with a time of 2:01.53. Kelsey Elizondo (Salt Lake City, Utah/Judge Memorial) took first in the 200yd butterfly, improving her seed time with a winning mark of 2:13.32. Zachary Walker (Portland, Ore./Grant) made it a sweep in the 200 fly, posting a winning time of 2:02.83.
Barton won her second event of the evening in the 100yd freestyle, out-touching Whitman's Lauren Flynn bu seven one-hundredths of a second to improve her season best with a time of 55.72. Freshman Aleksander Jeremic (Skopje, Macedonia/Nova) took first in the men's 100yd free with a time of 48.31 while Kenzie Kitson (Durango, Colo.) was victorious in the 200yd backstroke with a time of 2:15.48.
Kowalski also took first in the 200yd backstroke for his second win of the evening, posting a time of 1:58.34. Sophomore Hannah Vernon (Morgantown, W.Va./University) followed that up with a win in the 500yd freestyle, improver her seed time by over four seconds.
Freshman Tracy Wormwood (Elk River, Minn.) won the final individual women's event of the night, taking first with a time of 2:31.34. In the final individual men's event, Maxwell Cohen (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva) took first to give the Loggers a 14-point lead heading into the final event.
The Loggers women took care of business, winning the 400yd freestyle relay with a mark of 3:42.67 to win the meet with a score of 152-53. The Logger men weren't so lucky as their lone relay team was disqualified, allowing Whitman to scored 15 points and collect the 102-101 victory.
Puget Sound will wrap up the dual portion of the 2009-10 schedule on Saturday afternoon when they head to Spokane to take on rival Whitworth, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
