Puget Sound swim teams set to take on Pirates and Missionaries

TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound swim teams are set to resume Northwest Conference dual meets when they travel to Whitworth and Whitman this weekend.

Tough competition

The Loggers began their 2016 by swimming against Division I Minnesota and Division II Simon Fraser. Nick Mitchell finished third in the 800-meter freestyle and 200 individual medley, and picked up a second place finish in the 400-meter freestyle against Simon Fraser. Keven Henley finished second in both the 100 and 50 freestyle. On the women's side against Simon Fraser, Carmen Mena placed second in the 800 freestyle and 400 freestyle, while Ally Hembree was second in the 400 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Despite falling in both meets, Puget Sound will use the tough competition as a springboard into the home stretch of the Northwest Conference schedule.

Conference standings (as of Nov. 14)

The Puget Sound men are 2-2 in the Northwest Conference, good for fourth place. There is a three-way tie for first, as Pacific Lutheran, Whitman, and Whitworth are all 4-0. The Logger women are 3-1 in the NWC, which is tied with Linfield and Whitworth for second place. Pacific Lutheran is in first with a 4-0 mark.

Scouting Whitworth

The Pirate men are currently in a tie for first place in the Northwest Conference. They most recently swam against Seattle University, falling on Jan. 8, 104-101, and on Jan. 9, 116-88. The Whitworth men finished second at the Northwest Invitational on Nov. 20-21. The Pirate women are currently tied for second place in the NWC. They fell to Seattle University on Jan. 8, 149-55, and on Jan. 9, 135-68. They placed fifth at the Northwest Invitational. 

Scouting Whitman

The Missionary men are currently tied for first place in the NWC. They most recently defeated the College of Idaho, 155-105, on Jan. 16. The Whitman women are currently fifth in conference standings. They were narrowly edged by the College of Idaho, 127-126, in their most recent meet.
