Prewitt's last second overtime shot helps Loggers topple Blues

WALLA WALLA, Washington – In a matchup between the top two teams in the Northwest Conference, the No. 18/19 Puget Sound women's basketball team edged No. 16/14 Whitman in overtime, 73-71, on Saturday afternoon. Elizabeth Prewitt's last second lay-up gave the victory to the Loggers.

Samone Jackson led all scorers with 22 points, while Caitlin Malvar and Jamie Lange both recorded 14 points. Elizabeth Prewitt chipped in nine points, including the game winner in overtime. The Loggers took over sole possession of first place in the Northwest Conference with the victory, while handing the Blues their first loss of the season.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with Puget Sound (14-1, 6-0 NWC) holding a five-point lead, before Whitman (14-1, 5-1 NWC) grabbed a one point lead, 21-20, at the end of the first period. The home team began to establish a lead in the second quarter, and lead 32-26 at halftime.

The Loggers fought back in the second half, and tied the game at 36 with seven minutes left in the third quarter. The Blues held a lead of four points in the fourth quarter. Puget Sound tied the game, 59-59, with just under a minute left on a pair of Lange free throws. A Whitman lay-up gave the home team a temporary lead, but after getting fouled, Jackson calmly knocked down two free throws with seven seconds left to re-tie the game. Whitman's last minute shot was off, and so the two nationally ranked teams moved to overtime.

The overtime period proved similar to the rest of the game, with each team exchanging the lead. The game was tied, 71-71, with Puget Sound in possession of the ball with eight seconds remaining. Prewitt took control of the ball, making a spin move to lose her defender, and sunk her lay-up with a second left to give the victory to the Loggers.

Puget Sound shot 40.9 percent (27-for-66) from the field, while Whitman shot 38.8 percent (26-for-67). The Loggers were 7-for-21 (33.3 percent) from beyond the arc. The Blues were 7-for-25 (28.0 percent) on 3-point shots. Puget Sound were outrebounded 48-43.

The Loggers return home on Tuesday, January 17, when they host cross-town rival Pacific Lutheran. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m.
