Smith scores two goals, lacrosse falls to Whitman

WALLA WALLA, Washington – Kerri Smith continued her goal scoring form, but the University of Puget Sound lacrosse team lost, 17-5, to Whitman on Saturday afternoon to begin Northwest Conference play.

Kerri Smith recorded two goals and had an assist. Meghan Bacher, Roxanne Krietzman, and Andriana Cunningham each scored a goal in the game for the Loggers (0-3, 0-1 NWC).

The Loggers and Missionaries (1-1, 1-0 NWC) exchanged goals to being the game. The score was tied 2-2 with 23:49 to play in the first half. Whitman then scored seven unanswered goals to go up 9-2. Smith and Cunningham scored back-to-back goals to stop the momentum, but the Missionaries scored with just under a minute to hold a 10-4 lead at the break.

Puget Sound was outscored 7-1 in the second half, as the Loggers fell in the first Northwest Conference game of the season.

Goalkeeper Leah Stromberg (0-3) made 10 saves. Hailey Shoemaker and Elena Becker each picked up three ground balls, while Smith caused three turnovers and recorded two draw controls.

Puget Sound will next host Linfield on Sunday, March 6. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. on Lower Baker Field.
