TACOMA, Wash. – The University of Puget Sound women's tennis team took control with a sweep of the doubles and held on for a 7-2 win over George Fox. The Loggers (1-2, 1-2 NWC) took a controlling lead in the double portion of the match and didn't let up with four wins in singles.
"We played solid tonight," commented head coach Steve Bowen. "we played in some scrappy matches but stayed solid through the whole match."
Madison Holtz and Maddie Thiesse gave the Loggers a lead with an 8-5 win in the No. 1 doubles match over the Bruins (0-1, 0-1 NWC) Molly Beaumont and Cara Griffith. In the No. 3 match, Jenna Gerdsen and Ada Yu defeated Liliya Abildayeva and Bethany Nguyen 8-6 to add to the lead. Marissa Friedman and Logan Thompson rounded out the doubles match with a 9-8 (7-0) win in the No. 2 match over Alyssa Emoto and Shaina Inn.
The Bruins pushed in the singles matches with a couple wins in the Nos. 1-2 matches. Beaumont defeated Holtz 6-3, 6-2 and Emoto defeated Thiesse 6-1, 6-1 to bring the Bruins in striking distance. However, Thompson stayed undefeated in singles match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Nguyen in the No. 4 match while Gerdsen earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Inn in the No. 3 match to clinch the victory. Friedman went on to defear Abdilayeva 6-4, 6-3 and Yu clinched a 7-5, 6-3 win over Griffith to end the night for the Loggers.
The win is the Loggers first of the season. They will host Pacific at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
