Whitman Escapes Loggers Upset Bid

TACOMA, Wash. – Four singles wins weren't quite enough as Whitman escaped an upset bid from the Puget Sound women's tennis team. The Missionaries (6-0, 5-0 NWC) used a doubles sweep to come away with the win.

Whitman took all three doubles points in convincing fashion to build an early lead in the match. Both the No. 1 and No. 2 matches went to the Whits by a score of 8-3. The No. 3 match was decided by a score of 8-1.

The Loggers narrowed the gap in singles but couldn't overcome the deficit. Logan Thompson captured a 6-3, 6-1 win in the No. 3 match to breeze past Jenna Dobrin. Josie Dow also won in straight sets with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Erin Minuth.

Courtney Lawless won 6-1, 6-1 over the Loggers' Maddie Thiesse in No. 1 singles and Morgan Lawless defeated Jenna Gerdsen 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 to clinch the match for the Missionaries.

Marissa Friedman and Malia Ford each still captured three-set wins over their Whitman counterparts to close out the match. Friedman won 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 at No. 4 and Ford won 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) at No. 6.

The Loggers host Lewis & Clark next Friday at 4 p.m.
