Coach Mark Massey is one of the winningest volleyball coaches in America, currently ranked #4 in career victories among all active NCAA-III coaches, as well as #16 among active volleyball coaches in all NCAA Divisions. Over 29 seasons he has guided Logger volleyball to four National Quarterfinal berths, and qualified for nine NCAA tournaments. His Puget Sound teams have been ranked in the NCAA “Top 25” poll 119 times.

During the D-III era Logger volleyball has collected three Conference titles and 19 All-American honors, including three First-Team selections. Massey has been named NWC "Coach of the Year" three times (2000, 2005, 2022.) In 2000, Massey was named the AVCA West Region Coach of the Year.

Massey guided Puget Sound to another successful season in 2024, as the Loggers finished the regular season tied for 2nd in the NWC standings, and won two All-NWC 1st Team honors -- Senior RS Sarah Johnsen, and Frosh Middle Maddie Badger. Both players helped drive the team's #13 National ranking in blocking.

Badger was not only selected as the NWC Frosh of the Year, but grabbed the West Region Frosh of the Year award, as well. She was the 4th Region Frosh of the Year player developed by Massey, including standout outside hitters Brynn Blickenstaff (2008), Kayla Roof (2005), and Adriane Ougendal (2000.)

Badger's excellence also continues a long string of exceptional Middle attacker development in the Logger program under Massey. Hannah Stinson (2016) was named the NWC Conference Player of the Year as well as being selected as an All-American, along with All-American Middles Monica Groves (2006) and Karen Elmgren (2000, 2001.)

Consistent player development has been a hallmark of the Massey era at Puget Sound. Dominant Middle Avery Allemann was named to the 2023 All-NWC First team for the second year in a row, continuing a long string of exceptional “2x First-Team” Loggers -- Jordan Holman ('19, '21), Jackie Harvey ('12, '13), Brynn Blickenstaff ('08, '09, '10, '11), Rachel Gross ('06, '07), Monica Groves ('06, '07), Adriane Ougendal ('01, '02), Karen Elmgren ('01, '02), and Eileen Gamache ('99, '00).

Massey has a strong academic background in Sport Psychology, and has been a featured speaker at multiple AVCA National Conventions -- "Swing Attack Principles" (1999); "How to Teach the Swing Attack" (2001); “Skills without Drills: Dynamic ‘Over the Net’ Training Techniques” (2012); "“Video Feedback Toaster - Drop in a Player, Pop out a Performer” (2015). He has also published two books on the Swing Attack Offense.

His outstanding collegiate Head Coaching career includes Cal State Los Angeles ('89-'95), Northeastern University (Boston, '84-'89) and Syracuse University (New York, '80-'82). Massey was recognized in 1992 as the Asics/Volleyball Monthly NCAA D-II National Coach of the Year, was a two-time recipient of the AVCA Southwest Region Coach of the Year award, and was the California CCAA Conference Coach of the Year.

In 2003 Massey was inducted into the Cal State LA "Hall of Fame" for his coaching prowess. He elevated the D-2 Golden Eagle program to national-prominence, with their first ever NCAA tournament berth, an NCAA-2 "Final 4" appearance, four consecutive "Top 25" poll appearances (1992-95), and a .758 winning percentage. His high-powered 1995 CSLA team still holds the all-time NCAA-2 record for most kills in a 5-set match.

Massey holds a B.S. degree from Furman University (Greenville, South Carolina) in Biology/Physical Education, a Master's degree from Ithaca College (Ithaca, New York) in Physical Education/Sport Psychology, and studied through the ABD stage of a Doctorate in Education at Syracuse University (Syracuse, New York) specializing in Sports Psychology.
