TACOMA, Wash. - Holding the lead for nearly the entire match,
the 13th-ranked Puget Sound Loggers swept past the George Fox
Bruins, 25-21, 25-18, 25-19, in a Northwest Conference volleyball
match on Friday night at Stadium High School in Tacoma, Wash.
In the first set, the Loggers never fell behind from the opening
serve on as both squads came out hitting well. Puget Sound
hit .250 from the court while George Fox attacked at a .205 clip
but it was the Loggers who took the 1-0 match advantage, taking set
one, 25-21.
In the second set, the Bruins stepped up their game, hitting
.276, but so did the Loggers as Puget Sound attacked at a .370 clip
and again never trailed as they headed into the break with a 2-0
lead thanks to a 25-18 set two victory.
In the third set, the Bruins played tough, holding the lead on
three occasions but George Fox was hampered by eight attack errors
to slow their comeback attempt. On the other side of the net,
the Loggers collected a match-high 15 kills on 38 attacks with just
four errors for a .289 hitting percentage as they collected their
sixth NWC sweep of the season.
The Loggers were led by 13 kills from Kalli Kamphaus (Manson,
Wash.), who also added a pair of blocks. Junior Lindsey
Denman (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor) added 12 kills and six digs in
the winning effort while senior setter Jamee Fred (Centennial,
Colo./Grandview) added 30 digs on the day.
The Bruins were led by nine kills from Ashley Sheller, who also
added a team-high 12 digs. Ali Lefebvre led George Fox in
assists, collecting 23 on the night.
Puget Sound will close out the first half of NWC play on
Saturday night when they play host to Lewis & Clark. Game
time with the Pioneers is set for 7:00 p.m. at Stadium High School
in Tacoma, Wash.
