SALEM, Ore. - Collecting their fourth straight shutout in
Northwest Conference play, the fifth-ranked Puget Sound Loggers
used their potent offense to defeat the host Willamette Bearcats,
5-0, in a NWC women's soccer match on Saturday afternoon in Salem,
Ore.
The Loggers (9-1, 7-0 NWC) first got on the board in the 34th
minute when Melissa Abellanida (Pukalani, Hawaii/King
Kekaulike) following the corner kick from Fiona Gornick
(Portland, Ore./Grant) as Puget Sound took a 1-0 lead into
halftime.
In the second half, the Logger offense broke it open. Just
1:47 into the second half, freshman Jenny Moore (Kent,
Wash./Kentwood) made it 2-0 after firing in a shot from point blank
in front of the net. Less than a minute after Moore's goal,
Janece Levien (Beaverton, Ore.) took a pass from Mikaela Freeman
(Alameda, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) and shot from right to left and
into the net for a 3-0 Logger lead.
In the 69th minute, Levien made it 4-0 after scoring unassisted
from just three yards out. The Loggers scored their final
goal with just 59 seconds remaining when Freeman took the corner
from Gornick and fired off a shot from just four yards out.
Both Kallie Wolfer (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) and Katie
Wheeler (Sandpoint, Idaho) made two saves each for the Loggers as
they shared time in net. The Loggers outshot the Bearcats
12-6 on the day, including 9-4 in the second half.
Puget Sound wraps up the first half of the NWC season on Sunday
when they travel to Lewis & Clark. Game time with the
Pios is set for Noon at Griswold Stadium in Portland, Ore.
