PARKLAND, Wash. - The fourth-ranked Puget Sound Loggers set a
new team record for most goals scored in a Northwest Conference
game as they defeated the Pacific Lutheran Lutes, 8-0, in a NWC
women's soccer game on Wednesday afternoon at PLU Soccer Field in
Parkland, Wash.
The Loggers (11-1-0, 9-0-0 NWC) first got on the board in the
16th minute when freshman Jenny Moore (Kent, Wash./Kentwood) took
the ball off a throw in from Melissa Abellanida (Pukalani,
Hawaii/King Kekaulike) and Moore then fired in a shot from 18 yards
out that deflected off the crossbar and into the net.
NWC-leading scorer Janece Levien (Beaverton, Ore.) gave the Loggers
a 2-0 lead in the 23rd minute by dribbling the ball past defenders
following a pass from freshman Mikaela Freeman (Alameda,
Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) and then used her strong leg to put in a shot
from about 16 yards out.
Senior Fiona Gornick (Portland, Ore./Grant) scored her third
goal of the season at 30:36 on a penalty kick and then Freeman
scored a pair of goals in the 34th and 38th minutes off assists
from Gornick and Moore respectively. Puget Sound made it 6-0
heading into half when sophomore Molly Winterrowd (Tigard,
Ore./Tualatin) scored unassisted following a pass from the right.
In the second half, freshman Abby Goss (Spokane,
Wash./University) collected the rebound following a shot by Gornick
and powered the ball into the net for her second goal of the season
and a 7-0 Logger lead, tying the team-record set by the Loggers in
a 7-0 win over George Fox on Oct. 23, 2004. In the 70th
minute, freshman Theresa Henle (Issaquah, Wash.) scored her first
collegiate goal to give the Loggers the 8-0 lead and a new
team-record for goals scored against a NWC opponent.
The eight goals scored by Puget Sound is the most put up by a
Logger team since a 2001 season-opening 9-0 win over Morningside
(Iowa). The Loggers out shot the Lutes, 23-3 on the game and
had a 12-1 advantage on corner kicks. All three keepers on
the Logger roster saw significant minutes with Kallie Wolfer (Salt
Lake City, Utah/Skyline) earning the win with one save in
64:07. Kamyrn Morgan made three saves for the Lutes, allowing
all eight Logger goals.
Puget Sound returns to the pitch on Saturday afternoon when they
play host to George Fox. Game time with the Bruins is set for
Noon on Peyton Field at Baker Stadium in Tacoma, Wash.
