SPOKANE, Wash. - Despite going into halftime tied at 7-7, the
Puget Sound Loggers fell to the Whitworth Pirates, 35-7, in a
Northwest Conference football game on Saturday afternoon at the
Whitworth Pine Bowl in Spokane, Wash.
The Pirates got on the board first with 11:21 to go in the first
quarter when Adam Anderson plunged into the endzone for just two
yards out to cap a seven-play, 66 yard drive. Puget Sound
answered right back, using a 14 yard TD pass from Kavin Williams
(Ocean Shores, Wash./North Beach) to tight end Richard Bigelow
(Lake Tapps, Wash./Auburn Riverside) that tied the game at 7-7
following the PAT from Wyatt Evenson (Spokane, Wash./Shadle
Park). Neither team was able to get on board the rest of the
half as the Pirates missed a pair of field goals, including one
blocked by the Loggers' Dan Mensonides (Tacoma, Wash./Whittier).
In the third quarter, the Pirates unleashed Anderson again as he
scored the second of his eventual four touchdowns on a 48 yard run
with 11:40 left to go in the quarter. Anderson again scored
with 8:00 left in the third quarter to give Whitworth a 21-7 lead
and then a 17 yard TD run by Anderson with 13:44 remaining in the
came capped a 13-play, 99-yard drive that put Whitworth ahead 28-7.
The Bucs got their final score of the afternoon with just 1:17
remaining when Shenon Moore scored from three yards out and Andy
Largent made his fifth PAT of the game to give Whitworth the 35-7
victory.
The Loggers were led offensively by 108 yards on the ground from
Silas Paul (Portland, Ore./Oregon) on 23 total carries.
Williams finished with five-for-20 passing for 106 yards and the
one touchdown while adding 59 yards on 12 carries on the
ground. On defense, the Loggers were led by eight tackles
from senior linebacker Eric Borton (Yakima, Wash./West
Valley).
Whitworth was led by 214 yards on the ground on 26 carries from
Anderson, who had the four scores. Andrew Durant was
nine-of-15 passing for 91 yards and one interception by UPS corner
James Sobotka (Shelton, Wash.).
The Loggers return to Peyton Field at Baker Stadium next
Saturday when they play host to their cross-town rival Pacific
Lutheran. Kick-off with the Lutes is set for 1:30 p.m. on the
Puget Sound campus.
