REDLANDS, Calif. - After scoring 29 points in 31 minutes played,
senior Karen Chase (Yakima, Wash./West Valley) was named MVP of the
Redlands Tip-Off Classic as the Puget Sound Loggers defeated the
Redlands Bulldogs, 62-58, in a non-conference women's basketball
game on Saturday night in Redlands, Calif.
The Bulldogs (2-1) took the lead early, holding a seven-point
advantage with 12:33 remaining in the opening period. The
Loggers took the lead with 8:43 left in the first
half on a free-throw by Chase. After Redlands tied
the game with 25 seconds left, the Loggers took the lead heading
into the half following a jumper by Claire Ely (Walnut Creek,
Calif./Northgate) that gave UPS a 30-28 lead.
The Loggers continued to push the lead up to 10 points midway
through the period. Redlands began a comeback attempt,
retaking the lead with just over three minutes remaining but the
Loggers kept the pressure on. Chase hit a jumper with 55
seconds remaining and then hit the game winning basket with 23
ticks left on the board before Andrea Edwards (Yakima,
Wash./Columbia Basin CC) hit a pair of free throws with four
seconds left to clinch the victory.
Puget Sound was led by the game-high 29 points and six rebounds
from Chase, who collected tournament MVP honors. Ely was
named to the All-Tournament team after putting up 13
points. Freshman Courtney Blume (Olympia,
Wash./River Ridge) came off the bench to put up a team-high seven
boards.
Courtney Carroll led Redlands with 20 points and seven
boards. Ali Bueno added nine points in the loss.
The Loggers return to Tacoma on Tuesday evening as they play
host to Warner Pacific at Henry Foss High School in Tacoma,
Wash. Tip-off with the Knights is set for 6:00 p.m.
