NEWBERG, Ore. - Taking just three sets, the 23rd-ranked Puget
Sound Loggers swept past the George Fox Bruins, 25-22, 30-28,
25-17, in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Friday night
in Newberg, Ore.
The two squads played the first set close as the teams found
themselves tied at several points during the frame. Down 21-19, the
Loggers scored five straight points and then used a block by Erika
Greene (Draper, Utah/Juan Diego) and Sophie DeWitt (Astoria, Ore.)
to collect the 25-22 set one win.
The Loggers and Bruins again played a tight set in the second
frame and the Loggers again found themselves trailing late but they
overcame a 22-18 deficit to tie the set at 25-25 and eventually
played their way to the 30-28 set win to take a 2-0 advantage in
the match.
In the final frame, it was all Loggers as Puget Sound had their
best hitting set of the match (.209) while the Bruins
had their worst (.000). The Loggers quickly took the lead and
cruised to the 25-17 set win to clinch the match in three straight
frames.
The Loggers were led by 16 kills from freshman Brynn
Blickenstaff (Eagle, Idaho). Emma Bryant (South St. Paul,
Minn./Wisconsin-Superior) added 12 kills and just one attack error
on 27 attacks for a .407 hitting percentage. Senior Jamee
Fred (Centennial, Colo./Grandview) put up 46 assists in the win
while Juliette Witous (Sonoma, Calif.) dug out a match-high 23
balls.
The Bruins were led by nine kills from Ashley Sheller. Ali
Lefebvre added 19 assists while Ashley Sheller and Jennifer Panico
each ended up with 17 digs on the night.
The Loggers wrap up the 2008 regular season on Saturday evening
when they travel to Salem, Ore. to take on Willamette.
