TACOMA, Wash. - Using four goals in the first 20 minutes of the
game, the sixth-ranked Puget Sound Loggers became the first women's
soccer team in Northwest Conference history to finish 16-0-0 in
conference play as the Loggers defeated the Willamette Bearcats,
4-0, on Saturday afternoon on Peyton Field at Baker Stadium in
Tacoma, Wash.
The Loggers took the 1-0 lead in the fifth minute when Mikaela
Freeman (Alameda, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) sent in a pass to Jenny
Moore (Kent, Wash./Kentwood), who then fired a shot into the right
corner of the net. In the 14th minute, the Loggers struck
again as Moore found Fiona Gornick (Portland, Ore./Grant) in front
of the net and Gornick scored her sixth goal of the season.
Just over a minute later, the Loggers struck again when Melissa
Abellanida (Pukalani, Hawaii/King Kekaulike) took control of a
rebound off the right post and fired in a shot from five yards
out. Abellanida scored again in the 19th minute, putting a
head on a corner kick from Nikki Graff (Corvallis, Ore./Crescent
Valley).
The Loggers collected their 13th shutout of the season, limiting
Willamette to seven total shots, none of them on net.
Puget Sound will now wait until Monday morning to find out their
plans for the postseason. The national bracket is expected to
be released on NCAA.com at 9:00 a.m. PST.
