PORTLAND, Ore. - In the final match of the 2008 regular season,
the 23rd-ranked Puget Sound Loggers polished off their resume for
the NCAA DIII Volleyball Selection Committee, defeating the Lewis
& Clark Pioneers, 18-25, 25-14, 25-18, 21-25, 15-11, in a
Northwest Conference volleyball match on Saturday evening in
Portland, Ore.
The Loggers had a tough time warming up, hitting in negative
numbers in the first set as the Pios took a 1-0 advantage following
the 25-18 set one win. UPS came ready to play in the second
set, hitting .312 with 12 kills and just two attack errors on 32
attacks as they cruised to a 25-14 set victory.
In the third set, the Loggers again pounded out the kills,
putting down 15 kills with five errors on 41 attacks for a .244
hitting percentage to collect the 25-18 set three victory and take
their first lead of the match. In the fourth set, the Loggers
again hit well, hitting .323 on the frame, but so did the Pios, who
hit .333 to collect a 25-21 set win and force the fifth set.
In the fifth set, the teams stayed close but the Loggers
eventually began to pull away, hitting .391 with 11 kills and just
two attack errors on 23 attacks to clinch the match with a 15-11
set five win.
The Loggers were led by 17 kills and 26 digs by junior Lindsey
Denman (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor). Freshman Erika Green
(Draper, Utah/Juan Diego) added 15 kills with no errors to hit an
amazing .600 on the match while freshman Brynn Blickenstaff (Eagle,
Idaho) added 12 kills. Senior setter Jamee Fred (Centennial,
Colo./Grandview) added 47 assists in the final regular season match
of her career.
Margaret Dowling led the Pioneers with 14 kills on the
night. Katherine Fiedler and Kelsey Clark each added 12 kills
while Jessamy Holland chipped in 11 kills in the loss. Andrea
Chase added 27 assists in the match.
The Loggers finished up the 2008 season with a record of 17-7
overall and 12-4 in NWC play, in sole possession of second place in
the conference standings. Ranked sixth in all three NCAA West
Region polls, the Loggers will set their alarms for early Monday
morning as the NCAA is set to release the bracket for the 2008 NCAA
DIII Volleyball Championship Tournament on Monday morning at 6:00
a.m. PST.
