OLYMPIA, Wash. - Using yet another strong defensive effort, the
Puget Sound Loggers defeated the Evergreen Geoducks, 48-38, to give
Logger head coach Suzy Barcomb her 200th career victory
in a non-conference women's basketball game on Wednesday evening at
the College Recreation Center in Olympia, Wash.
In the first half, the Loggers (5-2) were led by the solid play
down low from senior post Karen Chase (Yakima, Wash./West Valley),
who put up 13 points in the first 20 minutes. In addition to the
strong offensive play in the paint, the Logger defense stepped up
as well, holding the Geoducks to just 23-percent shooting from the
field.
In the second half, the Geoducks were a little hotter from the
field but their scorers found themselves in foul trouble early. The
Loggers took their offense outside the arc, taking 11 attempts from
outside the arc, making a pair of three-pointers to keep the lead
and eventually collect the 48-38 win.
The Loggers were led by 16 points from Chase, who also added
eight rebounds and three blocks. Junior Claire Ely (Walnut Creek,
Calif./Northgate) added seven points to go with six steals and four
assists.
Evergreen was led by 12 points from Keisha McDonald. Kristi
Auckland collected the double-double, scoring 10 points and
bringing down 10 rebounds in the losing effort.
The Loggers now turn their attention to finals next week. Puget
Sound will next take to the court on Dec. 27 when they play host to
the Nick-N-Willy's Winter Classic.
