TACOMA, Wash. - Using two close sets and one not-so-close set,
the ninth-ranked Puget Sound Loggers rolled past the Linfield
Wildcats in three straight sets, 25-22, 25-23, 25-13, in a
Northwest Conference volleyball match on Saturday night at Stadium
High School in Tacoma, Wash.
In the first set, the Loggers (7-3, 2-0 NWC) used a pair of runs
to pull past the talented Wildcats (4-2, 0-2 NWC). In the
middle of the set, the Loggers used the powerful attacks of Kalli
Kamphaus (Manson, Wash.) and Brynn Blickenstaff (Eagle, Idaho) to
go on a five-point run to recover from a 17-13 deficit to a earn
the 18-17. After the Wildcats retook a 22-19 lead, the
Loggers scored six straight to take the first set, 25-22.
In the second set, the Loggers turned to strong blocking to go
ahead two sets to none. Hitting .324 on the frame, the
Loggers also blocked three balls. Lindsay Denman (Kenmore,
Wash./Inglemoor) joined the strong attack of Kamphaus and
Blickenstaff to head into the break with a two-set lead.
In the third set, the Wildcats took an early lead but the
Loggers went on a 11-5 run to pull ahead 11-9 and then went on an
11-2 run, including ten straight points, to take a 22-10
lead. The Wildcats were able to manage three more points but
in the end, the Loggers were too strong, collecting the 25-13 set
win and the match.
The Loggers were led by 10 kills each from Kamphaus and
Blickenstaff. Jamee Fred (Centennial, Colo./Grandview) put up
37 assists while freshman libero Juliette Witous dug out 13 balls
in the straight-set win.
The Wildcats were led by eight kills from Samantha Lau, who also
added 11 digs. Stephanie Purser put up 27 assists to go with
11 digs while Kelsey French added three blocks in the losing
effort.
The Loggers will travel to Parkland on Wednesday to take on
rival and nationally-ranked Pacific Lutheran. The match with
the Lutes is set for 7:00 p.m. at Olson Auditorium on the PLU
campus.
