TACOMA, Wash. - Taking on some of the best teams the west coast
has to offer, the seventh-ranked Puget Sound Loggers made the most
of their two matches on Friday, defeating Redlands and #12 Cal
State East Bay, on day one of the Puget Sound Premier volleyball
tournament at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.
#7 Puget Sound 3, Redlands 1 (25-21, 25-23, 25-14, 25-21)
In the first match of the day, the Loggers (5-1) got off to a
quick start, hitting .289 en route to a 25-21 set one win.
The Bulldogs stole one away in the second set but Puget Sound
answered back with two more strong sets to take the 3-1 win.
Junior Lindsey Denman (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor) led the way
with 17 kills while Juliette Witous (Sonoma, Calif) was a vacuum in
the back row, putting up 34 digs. Senior Jamee Fred
(Centennial, Colo./Grandview) put up 44 assists in the four-set
victory while Kalli Kamphaus (Manson, Wash.) and Brynn Blickenstaff
(Eagle, Idaho) finished with 14 and 12 kills respectively.
Redlands was led by 13 kills from Megan Phillips, who finished
the match hitting .455. Kelina Smith put up 27 assists while
Lauren Harding dug out 23 balls.
#7 Puget Sound 3, #12 Cal State East Bay 0 (25-20, 25-22,
25-17)
Taking the court with revenge their minds following a four-set
loss on Sunday, the Loggers came out strong in their second match
of the day. The Loggers hit .261 in the first set to take the
25-20 win and only got better, hitting .278 in the second set and
.292 in the third set. Cal State East Bay did the opposite,
going for .200 in set one to .158 in set two and -.038 in the final
set.
Blickenstaff led the way in the match with 12 kills.
Denman finished with 11 kills and just one attack error for a
.455 hitting percentage. Fred finished with 33 assists
on the match while Witous dug out 16 balls.
The Pioneers were led by 10 kills from Jackie Rudolph.
Roxanne Neely chipped in 25 assists and Lauren Massa led the
way with 12 digs.
Other Matches
#6 Trinity 3, #12 Cal State East Bay 1 (25-21, 19-25,
25-23, 25-17) - Rudolph had 22 kills for CSUEB and
Neely finsihed with 45 assists but it was the Trinity Tigers that
got the win. Megan Dudley led the Tigers with 17 kills and
just one attack error for a .471 hitting percentage. Caroline
Keener had 42 assists to help Trinity collect the win.
#5 La Verne 3, Redland 0 (27-25, 26-24, 25-16)
- The Bulldogs from Redlands suffered a pair of sub-.100 sets as
they were swept by the La Verne Leopards. La Verne picked up
10 kills from Crista Jones and 21 assists from Yesenia Lopez.
Chelsea Slieght added 22 digs for the Leopards.
#5 La Verne 3, #6 Trinity 1 (25-23, 15-25, 25-17,
25-18) - In a battle of two highly-ranked squads, the
Leopards proved they deserve the higher ranking, defeating the
Tigers in four sets. Jones finished with 18 kills to pace La
Verne while Brianna Gonzales added 12 to her daily totals.
Lopez finished with 43 assists while Slieght added 28 digs.
Caroline Keener had 34 assists for Trinity as Amy Mittelstaedt and
Megan Dudley finished with 12 kills each.
The tournament continues on Saturday with five matches beginning
at 9 a.m.
