NEWBERG, Ore. - Giving the 14th-ranked George Fox Bruins a
scare, the Puget Sound Loggers nearly upset the blue and gold,
falling 52-47 in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game on
Saturday night at Wheeler Sports Center in Newberg, Ore.
The first half was a collection of streaks as the Loggers
controlled the flow over the first few minutes. The Bruins
struggled to even get in position to take shots, with their first
field goal coming on their third attempt with just under 16 minutes
to go in the first half.
The Loggers did their damage from beyond the arc, making four
three-pointers, including three in a row as they took a brief lead.
George Fox bounced back, using a 12-0 run to end the first half.
Despite just three fouls called on the Bruins and no free throws
attempted by the Loggers in the first half, the Loggers trailed
just 26-20 heading into the break.
In the second half, the Loggers continued to chop at the Bruin
lead, eventually pulling even with just over four minutes remaining
and then taking the lead on a free throw by Natasha Ludwig (Hilo,
Hawaii/Waiakea) with 3:00 to go. The Bruins retook the lead with
2:37 remaining, ending a scoreless drought of nearly
four-and-a-half minutes. A basket by Ludwig with 59.6 to go gave
the Loggers the one-point lead again, 46-45.
Sage Indendi gave George Fox the lead again with 45 seconds
remaining after sinking a three from the top of the arc. After a
foul under the basket, Karen Chase (Yakima, Wash./West Valley) hit
the first of two free throws to get the Loggers back within one
point. The Bruins hit their free throws down the stretch to escape
with the 52-47 win.
The Loggers were led by 12 points off the bench from Chelsi Shaw
(Metaline Falls, Wash./Wenatchee Valley CC). Freshman Jocelyn
Riordan (Lake Forest Park, Wash./Shorecrest) added eight points
while Ludwig led the team with nine rebounds.
Elise Kuenzi led the Bruins with 13 points while Indendi added
12 points. Kristin Shielee led all rebounders with 12 boards on the
games.
The Loggers continue their road trip on Friday night when they
travel to Spokane to take on Whitworth.
