McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Senior Chelsi Shaw (Metaline Falls,
Wash./Wenatchee Valley CC) came off the bench to score 16 points as
the Puget Sound Loggers defeated the Linfield Wildcats, 69-57, in a
Northwest Conference women's basketball game on Saturday night at
Ted Wilson Gymnasium in McMinnville, Ore. The win was the
Loggers' fifth straight as they maintained sole possession of
second place in the NWC standings.
The Loggers fell behind early, not taking their first lead until
nearly the midpoint of the first half, using a three-pointer by
Shaw to take a 15-12 lead with 11:13 to go in the first
period. The Logger lead his nine points with just under six
minutes left and the Loggers maintained the advantage, holding a
36-31 lead at halftime.
In the second period, the Loggers raced out to a big lead before
the young 'Cats tried to get back in it. Linfield was able to
climb back within four points with 7:22 left. The Loggers
pushed yet again, taking a double-digit lead for good with just
over a minute to go as Puget Sound picked up the 69-57 victory.
The Loggers were led by the 16 points from Shaw. Junior
guard Claire Ely (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) and senior post
Karen Chase (Yakima, Wash./West Valley) each finished with 14
points and sic rebounds on the night.
Linfield was led by 17 points from Amanda Juarez. Sarah
Amina finished with 14 points while Chrissy Baumgartner finished
with a game-high 12 rebounds in the losing effort.
The Loggers return home on Tuesday night to take on cross-town
rival Pacific Lutheran. The game with the Lutes, which is the
annual Pink Zone game for breast cancer awareness, is set to begin
at 6:00 p.m. at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash. Fans are
asked to leave their maroon in their closet and instead wear pink
to help raise awareness for breast cancer research.
