WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Senior Janece Levien (Beaverton, Ore.)
scored the game winner in the third minute of overtime to keep the
second-ranked Puget Sound Loggers undefeated on the 2009 season
with a 2-1 victory over the Whitman Missionaries on Saturday in
Walla Walla, Wash.
The second-ranked Loggers got on the scoreboard just before
halftime as Mikaela Freeman (Alameda, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) fed the
ball into Abby Goss (Spokane, Wash./University), who put the ball
in net for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 Puget Sound lead.
Whitman evened it up in the 54th minute when Corina Gabbert took
a pass from Liz Forbes and fired the ball over Kallie Wolfer (Salt
Lake City, Utah) to tie the game at 1-1. With the remainder
of the game scoreless, the Loggers entered overtime for the first
time in 2009.
In the extra time, sophomore Jenny Moore (Kent, Wash./Kentwood)
got the ball into Levien, who simply chipped the ball over the head
of Courtney Porter for the game winner.
The Loggers outshot Whitman, 28-10, on the day, forcing Porter
to make nine saves on the afternoon. The Loggers also held an
8-1 advantage in corner kicks while Whitman was called for 20
fouls, compared with 11 for visiting Puget Sound.
The Loggers will head up to Spokane on Sunday for a matchup with
Whitworth, beginning at Noon on Whitworth Soccer Field.
