FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The Pacific Boxers gave it all they
had but in the end, the 23rd-ranked Puget Sound Loggers would prove
to be too much as the visiting Loggers collected a four-set victory
over the host Boxers in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on
Saturday night at Pacific Athletic Complex in Forest Grove,
Ore.
In the first set, the Loggers used seven straight points to take
the frame from a close 10-8 to a comfortable 17-8 and the Boxers
just couldn't find a way back into the set as the Loggers
collected the 25-17 set one victory. Despite the eight-point
differential, Pacific actually outhit Puget Sound in the opening
set, collecting 10 kills with six errors on 36 attempts for a .111
hitting percentage, compared with .088 for the visiting
Loggers.
In the second set, it was the Boxers who held the early lead. Down
12-8, the Loggers again used a strong run in the middle of the
frame, reeling off six straight points to pull ahead by two, 14-12.
The Boxers hung tough, pulling back within one at 19-18 but Puget
Sound put down six straight points to collect the 25-18 set two
victory.
The Boxers were determined to take the third set. After the two
teams played close early, Pacific used seven straight points to
take a 14-7 lead and after a Logger kill, the Boxers scored eight
more to pull ahead 22-8. The Loggers put together a run late in the
frame but they couldn't collect the sweep at Pacific took the
third set, 25-15.
In the final set, the Loggers used an 8-1 run to pull ahead 14-7
and the Boxers couldn't get back into the set. Puget Sound
continued to pound away, finally collecting the four-set victory
with a 25-9 set four win.
The Loggers were led in kills by 11 each from Kalli Kamphaus
(Manson, Wash.) and Brynn Blickenstaff (Eagle, Idaho). Kamphaus
also added four blocks in the victory. Senior setter Stephanie
Harvey (Yakima, Wash./Eisenhower) had an outstanding match,
recording 34 assists, 13 digs and five assists in the win. Senior
Leigh Sumida (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Iolani) added 22 digs for the
Loggers.
Pacific was led by 13 kills from Christiana Chandler and 10 more
from Alexa Block. Brittney Johnson added 20 assists in the losing
effort. The Boxers hit .105 for the match, recording 40 kills with
24 attack errors on 152 total attempts.
The Loggers head to Parkland on Wednesday to take on 16th-ranked
Pacific Lutheran in a pivotal NWC contest. Match time with the
Lutes is set for 7:00 p.m. at Olsen Auditorium.
