#21 Loggers Sweep Past Whitman On Senior Night

TACOMA, Wash. - Following the match, the four Puget Sound volleyball seniors were recognized after playing their final home match but during play, it was a pair of sophomores that led the way as the 21st-ranked Loggers defeated the Whitman Missionaries, 25-20, 25-14, 25-21, in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Saturday evening at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.

In the first set, the Loggers got off to the early lead but the Missionaries held tough.  With the scored tied at 12-12, Puget Sound scored six straight points to pull ahead 18-12 and Whitman struggled to get back into the set as the Loggers took the first frame, 25-20.

In the second set, senior Stephanie Harvey (Yakima, Wash./Eisenhower) collected the first kill of the set and the Loggers didn't look back as they led the frame from wire to wire.  A couple of five point runs put the Loggers up by as many as 14 points but a late Whitman push got them into double-digit points, though Puget Sound still collected the 25-14 set win.

The final set looked like it was going to go Whitman's way as they led 20-15 but the Loggers powered back, ending the home portion of their scheduled with a 10-1 run that gave them a 25-21 set three victory and the match, three sets to none.

The Loggers were led by nine kills from Bre Boyce (Kent, Wash./Kentwood), who also added three blocks on the night.  Brynn Blickenstaff (Eagle, Idaho) added eight kills and just one errors on 25 attempts to go with three service aces, nine digs and one block.  Harvey finished the night with 31 assists and a pair of aces while Leigh Sumida (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Iolani) added a team-high 14 digs.

Whitman was led by 10 kills from Courtney Brewer.  Alex Graves added 20 digs while Katie Richards chipped in 25 assists.  The Missionaries hit .035 for the match, putting down 27 kills but committing 23 errors on 115 total attacks.

The Loggers hit the road to conclude the 2009 regular season as they travel to George Fox on Friday night and Linfield on Saturday.
