TACOMA, Wash. - Following the match, the four Puget Sound
volleyball seniors were recognized after playing their final home
match but during play, it was a pair of sophomores that led the way
as the 21st-ranked Loggers defeated the Whitman Missionaries,
25-20, 25-14, 25-21, in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on
Saturday evening at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.
In the first set, the Loggers got off to the early lead but the
Missionaries held tough. With the scored tied at 12-12, Puget
Sound scored six straight points to pull ahead 18-12 and Whitman
struggled to get back into the set as the Loggers took the first
frame, 25-20.
In the second set, senior Stephanie Harvey (Yakima,
Wash./Eisenhower) collected the first kill of the set and the
Loggers didn't look back as they led the frame from wire to
wire. A couple of five point runs put the Loggers up by as
many as 14 points but a late Whitman push got them into
double-digit points, though Puget Sound still collected the 25-14
set win.
The final set looked like it was going to go Whitman's way as
they led 20-15 but the Loggers powered back, ending the home
portion of their scheduled with a 10-1 run that gave them a 25-21
set three victory and the match, three sets to none.
The Loggers were led by nine kills from Bre Boyce (Kent,
Wash./Kentwood), who also added three blocks on the night.
Brynn Blickenstaff (Eagle, Idaho) added eight kills and just one
errors on 25 attempts to go with three service aces, nine digs and
one block. Harvey finished the night with 31 assists and a
pair of aces while Leigh Sumida (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Iolani) added a
team-high 14 digs.
Whitman was led by 10 kills from Courtney Brewer. Alex
Graves added 20 digs while Katie Richards chipped in 25
assists. The Missionaries hit .035 for the match, putting
down 27 kills but committing 23 errors on 115 total attacks.
The Loggers hit the road to conclude the 2009 regular season as
they travel to George Fox on Friday night and Linfield on Saturday.
