TACOMA, Wash. - With their opponent hitting .337 on the match,
there wasn't much the 15th-ranked Puget Sound Loggers could do as
they fell in straight sets to the 19th-ranked Pacific Lutheran
Lutes in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Wednesday night
at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.
In the first set, the Lutes built a monster 10-1 lead and the
Loggers couldn't overcome the large hole. Pacific Lutheran's
Beth Hanna and Katy Tauscher couldn't be stopped as they tallied
four kills a piece as PLU collected the 25-15 set one victory.
In the second set, the visitors played as well as any coach
could expect them to play, recording 18 kills and committing just
three errors on 30 attack attempts to hit .500 for the frame and
collect a 25-12 victory. The Loggers improved as well,
hitting .115 with seven kills, but it wasn't enough.
In the third set, the Lutes finally looked human and the Loggers
finally looked like the national caliber team they are as the teams
battled the entire set. Puget Sound found themselves leading
midway through but the Lutes powered back and the two teams
exchanged leads until a PLU kill and a Logger attack error sealed
the win for Pacific Lutheran.
Puget Sound was led by 10 kills from sophomore Bre Boyce (Kent,
Wash./Kentwood). Stephanie Harvey (Yakima, Wash./Eisenhower)
added 18 assists while Leigh Sumida (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Iolani) had
nine digs.
PLU was led by 14 kills and 14 digs from Hanna as they hit .337
for the match with 47 kills and 12 attack errors on 104
attempts. Sarah Beaver finished the night with 40 assists
while Kelcy Joynt added 10 digs.
The Loggers hit the road this weekend, traveling just south of
the 45th parallel north to take on Willamette in Salem, Ore.
