TACOMA, Wash. - Senior Austin Boyce (Kent, Wash./Kentwood) went
for a season-high 26 points but the George Fox Bruins used 59
second-half points to slip past the Puget Sound Loggers, 87-75, in
a Northwest Conference men's basketball game on Friday night at
Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.
The Loggers took the reins from the very beginning, scoring the
first six points of the game as they set the early pace. The
Bruins finally found their shot, evening the game up with 11:10
left to go in the first half but Puget Sound used another run late
to lead by 12 points with 34 seconds left in the first half.
George Fox hit a jumper with four seconds left to bring the
deficit back to ten points as the Loggers took a 38-28 lead into
the halftime break.
In the second half, it looked like the Loggers would continue to
hold off the Bruins but a 10-2 run by George Fox got them back
within two points with 13:06 left to play. Puget Sound was
able to hold onto the lead until the 9:45 mark when Cole Whitehurst
hit a jumper and drew the foul to allow GFU to take a one-point
lead following the free throw.
Puget Sound briefly gained the lead back but the Bruins quickly
got back in the lead and pushed the advantage in double digits with
3:45 left to play. The Loggers hit shots down the stretch to
stay competitive but George Fox took advantage of their free throw
opportunities as they collected the 87-75 victory.
Puget Sound was led by the 26 points from Boyce. Edric
Egberuare (San Jose, Calif./Milipitas) came off the bench to score
14 points while Kaleb Shelton (Tacoma, Wash./Lincoln) chipped in 13
points. The Loggers did a good job taking advantage of 18
George Fox turnovers, scoring 21 points off the giveaways.
George Fox was led by 19 points and eight rebounds from Alex
Stockner. Stephen Wiseley added 18 points while Whitehurst
chalked up 13 points in the winning effort. Rich Smith and
Travis Toedtemeier each had 12 points while Evan Atwater rounded
out the Bruins in double-digits with 10 points.
The Loggers will be back in action on Saturday night when they
play host to Linfield. Tip with the Wildcats is set for 8:00
p.m. at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.
