Bruins Come Back To Best Loggers, 87-75

TACOMA, Wash. - Senior Austin Boyce (Kent, Wash./Kentwood) went for a season-high 26 points but the George Fox Bruins used 59 second-half points to slip past the Puget Sound Loggers, 87-75, in a Northwest Conference men's basketball game on Friday night at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.

The Loggers took the reins from the very beginning, scoring the first six points of the game as they set the early pace.  The Bruins finally found their shot, evening the game up with 11:10 left to go in the first half but Puget Sound used another run late to lead by 12 points with 34 seconds left in the first half.  George Fox hit a jumper with four seconds left to bring the deficit back to ten points as the Loggers took a 38-28 lead into the halftime break.

In the second half, it looked like the Loggers would continue to hold off the Bruins but a 10-2 run by George Fox got them back within two points with 13:06 left to play.  Puget Sound was able to hold onto the lead until the 9:45 mark when Cole Whitehurst hit a jumper and drew the foul to allow GFU to take a one-point lead following the free throw.

Puget Sound briefly gained the lead back but the Bruins quickly got back in the lead and pushed the advantage in double digits with 3:45 left to play.  The Loggers hit shots down the stretch to stay competitive but George Fox took advantage of their free throw opportunities as they collected the 87-75 victory.

Puget Sound was led by the 26 points from Boyce.  Edric Egberuare (San Jose, Calif./Milipitas) came off the bench to score 14 points while Kaleb Shelton (Tacoma, Wash./Lincoln) chipped in 13 points.  The Loggers did a good job taking advantage of 18 George Fox turnovers, scoring 21 points off the giveaways.

George Fox was led by 19 points and eight rebounds from Alex Stockner.  Stephen Wiseley added 18 points while Whitehurst chalked up 13 points in the winning effort.  Rich Smith and Travis Toedtemeier each had 12 points while Evan Atwater rounded out the Bruins in double-digits with 10 points.

The Loggers will be back in action on Saturday night when they play host to Linfield.  Tip with the Wildcats is set for 8:00 p.m. at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.
