Box Score

ATHERTON, Calif. – Three Loggers scored in double digits as the University of Puget Sound women's basketball team defeated Occidental 64-51 at the Menlo Winter Classic on Sunday. The Loggers (7-1) extended their winning streak to seven games.

Kelsey McKinnis led Loggers with a game-high 18 points and Lindsay Layland was just short of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Layland pulled down five offensive boards to lead the Loggers to a 15-6 advantage on the offensive glass.

The Tigers were led by Laura Mohler with 15 points and Michelle Lo with 14 points.

"It was a battle. They never laid down and we had to keep up the intesity the whole game," said head coach Loree Payne. "Our leaders stepped up and took control of the game in the last few minutes. They buckled down and really stepped up as leaders."

The Loggers came out with their signature solid defense, limiting the Tigers to just 26.9 percent shooting in the first half. The Loggers shot 33.3 percent in the opening half to take a 28-21 lead into the locker room.

Both teams found more of an offensive groove in the second half with Occidental shooting 45.8 percent and the Loggers nailing 40 percent of their shots. However, the Loggers shot 15-of-21 from the free throw line to hold off the surging Tigers for the 64-51 victory.

The Loggers are set to face the host, Menlo, tomorrow at 4 p.m.
