SAN ANTONIO – The Puget Sound women's volleyball
team did all it could to hack and chop its way back into the top-25
in the nation. The Loggers (5-3) surged past No. 14 Southwestern
and No. 22 Trinity to go 3-1 in the Trinity Fall Classic. Brynn Blickenstaff was named to the All-Tournament team for her
outstanding performances.
"Our goal this weekend was to go 3-1," said head
coach Mark Massey. "We are really excited to meet that goal.
We grew tremendously as a team with a visible growth on the court
from one match to the next."
Southwestern (W, 3-1)
Natalie Monro took Southwestern by storm as she pounded out 28
kills to lead the Loggers to a 3-1 victory. Monro hit .302 in the
outburst to pace the Loggers, who outhit Southwestern
.210-.166.
Blickenstaff added 14 kills and four service aces to the cause
as the Loggers knocked off their first top-25 team of the season.
The Loggers also combined for 10 blocks to keep the Southwestern
attack at bay.
The Loggers got things of on the right foot with a 26-24 victory
in the first set and took a key 2-0 advantage with 25-19 victory in
the second set. Southwestern cam roaring back as it just edged the
Loggers for a 29-27 win to avoid the sweep. However, the Loggers
closed the deal with a 25-23 win in the fourth set.
Erika Greene recorded 50 assists while Juliette Witous added 22
digs to help push the Loggers over the top. Both numbers were
match-highs.
Trinity (W, 3-1)
The Loggers knocked off another top-25 team to meet their goal
of 3-1 this weekend with a 3-1 win over the host, Trinity. The
Loggers took the first set 25-19 but Trinity tied up the match with
a 25-16 win in the second set. Then, it was all Loggers as they
rolled 25-20 and 25-19 through the final two sets to claim the
match.
Blickenstaff had her second 20-kill match of the season with
exactly 20 kills on .341 hitting. Witous added 24 digs while Kris Sumida added 20 more digs of her own. Greene contributed 45 assists
and Monro had 13 kills.
The Loggers outhit the host .242 to .127 and had a higher
hitting percentage in every set accept the second. Trinity was held
to a -.043 hitting percentage in the fourth and deciding set.
With a 3-1 weekend under their belts, the Loggers are primed for
their home-opener and NWC-opener on Friday when they host at
Whitman at 7 p.m. in Memorial Fieldhouse.
