SPOKANE,
Wash. – The No. 12 ranked Puget
Sound women's soccer team (5-1-1, 2-1 NWC) suffered its first
loss of the season Saturday afternoon to the hand of Whitworth
(5-2, 3-1 NWC), 4-0, in Spokane, Wash.
Whitworth's first
goal came in the second minute by Elizabeth Mattila on an assist by
Sarah Berentson. Berentson crossed it into the box and Matilla
headed the ball into the far side of the net.
The second goal came from
Berentson in the 23rd minute on an assist by Mattila on
a two-on-one breakaway.
Berentson also scored the
third Pirate goal in the 50th minute, kicking in a loose
ball in the net. The assist came from Cory Druffel.
Whitworth added its final
goal in the 88th minute as Courtney Larson scored off of
the crossbar on a rebound and was assisted by Allie
Smith.
Junior Jenny Moore (Kent,
Wash.) led the Loggers with two shots on goal.
The shots were about even
as Whitworth took 10 and fired six on goal, while the Loggers had
seven shots, five on goal.
Freshman Casey Thayer
(Boulder, Colo.) earned the start in goal, making two saves. Callie
Bergstrom was the winning keeper for the Pirates, earning the
shutout and making five saves.
The Loggers return to the
field tomorrow, taking on Whitman in Walla Walla, Wash., at
noon.
