Loggers Fall Short In First Place Battle

Box Score

TACOMA, Wash. – The University of Puget Sound women's basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday with a 72-63 loss to Lewis & Clark. It was the second night in a row that the Loggers (13-4, 6-2 NWC) hosted a team with which it was tied for first place.

After an emotional victory over George Fox on Saturday, the Loggers fell victim to a hot shooting Pioneers team. The Pios (13-4, 7-1 NWC) shot 54.3 percent in the game, including 60.9 percent in the second half as they pulled away from the Loggers. The Loggers shot 36.8 percent from the floor.

Despite the shooting discrepancy, the Loggers stayed within striking distance for the majority of the game. The Loggers tenacious defense forced 20 turnovers to help limit the Pios chances. The Loggers also were 16-of-18 from the free throw line to help keep the game close.

"We fought hard, but unfortunately (Lewis & Clark) came up and hit some big shots," said head coach Loree Payne. "They had some players who were very good tonight and defensively we needed to lock it down on defense but unfortunately weren't able to do that at times tonight."

Kelsey McKinnis led the Loggers with 19 points while Sarah Stewart added nine points and eight rebounds. For the Pios, Kristina Williams and Sara Villanueava combined for 44 points with 24 and 20 points, respectively.

The Loggers hit the road next week as they visit Pacific on Friday and Willamette on Saturday to start the second round of NWC play.
