Loggers Defeat George Fox, Stay Tied Atop NWC Standings

Box Score

NEWBERG, Ore. – The Puget Sound women's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the first half and held tight in the second half to defeat George Fox 2-1 on Sunday. The Loggers (12-3-2, 10-2-2 NWC) scored both of their goals less than two minutes apart in the first half.

Jenny Moore opened the scoring when she converted a penalty kick just 18:02 into the match. Mikaela Freeman boosted the lead to 2-0 at 19:52 mark when she scored from 12 yards out to the left corner. Christine Isabella earned the assist on the goal.

The Loggers had nine shots in the first half while holding the Bruins (2-11-5, 2-9-3 NWC) without a shot throughout the first 45 minutes.

The second half was a much different story as the Bruins put three shots on goal as did the Loggers. Kara Merfeld made two saves for the Loggers but Esther Harder tapped in a goal off of a rebound from one of those saves to cut the lead to 2-1 in the 80th minute.

Alyssa Montero made three saves in the final frame and five in the match to keep the Bruins within reach.

The Bruins could not tack another score on the board as the Loggers came away with the much-needed victory.

The Loggers return home next week to conclude their regular season. They will host Lewis & Clark on Friday at noon and Pacific on Saturday at noon in Baker Stadium.
