TACOMA, Wash. – Five Loggers scored in double digits as the Puget Sound men's basketball team captured a 99-88 season-opening win over Portland Bible. The Loggers (1-0) shot 66.7 percent in the game to key the victory.

The Loggers never trailed over the final 26 minutes in the victory as they held off a Wildcats (2-5) team that made over 55 percent of their three-point attempts. Riggs Yarbro hit a jumper to give the Loggers a 33-32 lead with 5:47 left in the first half and the Loggers never trailed again.

Anthony Gittens was the story of the first half as he powered his way to 17 points in the opening half against an undersized Portland Bible. Gittens finished the game with 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting.

In the second half, the Wildcats came out on fire. Tim Mahan hit a three-pointer just four minutes into the half to close an eight-point halftime Logger lead down to just two points. Mahan finished with a game-high 23 points to lead five Wildcats in double digits.

The Loggers were able to keep a lead as the teams traded buckets. Finally, the Wildcats tied the game at the 6:57 mark on a Will Smith jumper. However, Derek Jobe, in his Logger debut, hit back-to-back three-pointers to push the Logger lead back to 84-78. The Loggers used that momentum to slowly pull away the rest of the way.

Jobe ended up with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting with all his points coming in the second half. Kaleb Shelton added 16 points for the Loggers while fellow senior Edric Egberaure contributed 18 points. Riggs Yarbro added 13 more points to the Logger cause.

The Loggers will host La Verne tomorrow at 8 p.m. in the final game of the Tip-Off Classic.
