Loggers Climb Alone Into First Place With 1-0 Win

Box Score

TACOMA, Wash. – A 1-0 win over Lewis & Clark, coupled with a Linfield tie, boosted the Puget Sound women's soccer team into first place today. The Loggers now stand alone atop the Northwest Conference standings and can clinch their tenth consecutive NWC title and an automatic qualification into the NCAA Tournament with a win tomorrow.

Kylie Beeson scored the game-winner for the Loggers (13-3-2, 11-2-2 NWC) in the 12th minute. A well-placed cross put the ball into the middle of the penalty box. Jenny Moore took possession and found Beeson on the far post. Beeson promptly shot one past the keeper to the lower left corner for her fourth goal of the season and the only goal of the match.

The Loggers were tremendous defensively, allowing just one shot from the Pioneers (2-15-2, 1-13-1 NWC). The Loggers controlled possession throughout the match as the Pios could not keep possession in the Loggers half.

Geena Fong made 10 saves in goal for the Pios to keep the match close. Moore and Fong met face-to-face four times as Moore often found herself behind the defense in the second half. However, Fong was up to the challenge every time to deny the Loggers a second goal.

The Loggers put up 13 shots in the second half to outshot the Pios 20-1 in the match.

The Loggers will celebrate Senior Day tomorrow when they host Pacifc, who played Linfield to a scoreless tie today. The match is scheduled for noon in Baker Stadium.

Notes: A Logger win against Pacific tomorrow clinches an outright title and an AQ for the Loggers. The Loggers need to tie Pacific to earn at least a share of the NWC title. A Logger tie and a Linfield win will move the teams back to even in first place and Linfield will receive the NWC's automatic qualifier into the postseason via tiebreaker. A Logger loss and a Linfield win will result in Linfield winning the outright title.
