Loggers Down Willamette 76-60 To Move To 2-0

Box Score

SALEM, Ore. – The Puget Sound women's basketball team scored the first five points of the game and never looked back on the way to a 76-60 victory at Willamette. Kelsey McKinnis scored a season-high 23 points for her second consecutive night with 20 or more points.

Lindsay Layland also had a big night for the Loggers (5-2, 2-0 NWC) with 17 points and 14 rebounds. She also had five assists while shooting 6-of-8 from the floor.

"It truly was a total team effort tonight," said head coach Loree Payne. "(Willamette) came after us and never let down. We handled the pressure with a lot of composure and a lot of poise. We stepped up and hit some big shots to put it away."

Ashley Agcaoili scored the first points of the night and McKinnis hit her first of four threes on the night to give the Loggers a 5-0 lead out of the gates. Dora Rabih's jumper brought the Bearcats (0-6, 0-2 NWC) at 5-5 with just under 18 minutes left.

After a three minute drought from both teams, Jocelyn Riordan hit a three-pointer to give the Loggers an 8-5 – a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.

Riordan finished with 14 points for the Loggers. Kaleigh Westermann led the Bearcats with 14 points while Katelyn Nordlien added 11 points.

The Loggers found a hot hand as they shot 53.3 percent from long range as a team. McKinnis was 4-for-6 on three-point attempts to lead the long-range effort.

The Loggers too a 34-27 lead at the half, but the Bearcats refused to go quietly. After battling for most of the half to keep the lead in single digits, the Loggers went on a 12-4 run over the final four and a half minutes to pull away for the big victory.

The Loggers will head down to Olympia, Wash. on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader with Evergreen St. The women's game will tipoff at 6 p.m.
