Yarbro Lifts Loggers To Comeback Win

Box Score

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Riggs Yarbro scored the last four points of the game to lead the Puget Sound men's basketball to a 66-64 comeback win over Whitman. With the win, the Loggers (16-5, 8-4 NWC) climb into a three-way tie for second in the Northwest Conference.

Down by as much as seven with 14:22 left in the second half, the Loggers were able to catch and pass the Missionaries (15-6, 8-4 NWC) to complete a season sweep of their NWC rivals. Yarbro scored the last five Logger points, including game-tying and go-ahead jumpers on back-to-back possessions.

After going down 50-43 on a three-pointer from David Michaels, the Loggers went on 6-0 run to cut the lead to one. Anthony Gittens capped the run with a layup at the 11:12 mark.

The teams traded buckets over the next five minutes before a scoring drought struck both teams. Kaleb Shelton-Johnson's free throws with 6:27 left put the score at 61-59 I favor of Whitman, but both teams went silent for three and half minutes.

With 2:51 left, Ryan Rogers finally broke the silence when his jumper tied the game at 61-61. Yarbro reclaimed the Logger lead with a free throw 30 seconds later. Michaels finally broke a four-and-a-half minute Missionary scoring drought with a three-point play that put Whitman back on top 64-62.

Yarbro tied the game up on the Loggers next possession and reclaimed the Logger lead after a missed three-pointer from Michaels, which proved to be the game-winner as the Missionaries came up short on their final possession.

The Loggers had a 37-35 lead at halftime but were haunted by turnovers as Whitman took advantage of four-straight Logger turnovers to claim the lead in the second half.

Yarbro finished with 13 points for the Loggers and Shelton-Johnson had a game-high 17 points. Anthony Gittens added a double-double with 13 points and 12 boards while Edric Egberaure was just short of a double-double of his own with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Michaels led Whitman with 16 points while Ignas Pavilonis added 12 and Drew Raher had 10. The Missionaries attempted 29 three-pointers in the game, connecting on 10 of those tries. However, the Loggers held the Missionaries to just 33.9 percent shooting while shooting 47.9 percent themselves.

The Loggers used the shooting advantage and a 43-27 rebound advantage to overcome 21 turnovers in the game. Whitman had just eight turnovers.

The Loggers return home on Tuesday to host a crucial NWC game with Pacific Lutheran, who sits in fifth place and just one game behind the three-way tie for second place. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game to support the annual "Think Pink" night.
