Loggers find net thrice, shut out Whitworth

Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash.—The Puget Sound women's soccer team continued its recent run of form, dispatching Whitworth 3-0 Saturday.

The Loggers scored two goals in the first half. Kylie Beeson opened scoring with her second goal of the year, netting a cross Jordyn McLuen in the 13th minute. Just a minute later, the Loggers were on the attack again as Annie Jonnson fired a shot on net, but saw it saved by Whitworth keeper Andrea Stump.

The Loggers pressured Whitworth tremendously during the 21st to 34th minutes, firing six shots during that span and logging two corner kicks. All the shots were either blocked or off target, however, and the Pirates weathered the storm without going down another goal.

They couldn't escape the Logger attack for the entire half, however, as Haley Rosenberg tallied her first of the season with less than a minute left in the half.  Rosenberg blasted a shot high into the corner of the Whitworth goal and the Loggers deservedly took a two-goal lead into the half.

The teams traded possessions for first 25 minutes of the second half. Starting in the 70th minute of the match, Whitworth earned three consecutive corner kicks, but the Logger defense held and didn't even allow a shot during that period.

After that, the Loggers reversed pressure and built up their offense, breaking through for their third goal of the afternoon in the 80th minute.  With just over 10 minutes left to go in the game, Beeson found herself in space and slid the ball past Stump into the corner of the net for her second of the match. Whitworth was unable to set up an attack in the final 10 minutes, and the match ended 3-0 in favor of the visiting Loggers.

Beeson, Jonsson, and Amalia Acorda-Fey all had registered four shots on the day, and Beeson's two goals and two shots on goal were match-highs as well. Whitworth's Stump made three saves on the day, while Logger keeper Lauren Thomas made two herself to keep the clean sheet. The stingy Puget Sound defense held the Pirates to just four shots, two on frame, while the Loggers themselves fired 19 shots, with six of those being on target.

The Loggers (8-2-2, 6-1-2 NWC) will close out their two-match road trip with a game Sunday, Oct. 20 at Whitman. That contest will kick off at 12:00 p.m.
