Loggers win Seventh match in a row with 3-1 victory over Bruins

NEWBERG, Ore.—The University of Puget Sound volleyball team tallied their second win in as many days and extended their winning streak to seven matches with a 3-1 victory over George Fox in Newberg, Ore, Saturday night.

The Loggers opened up the match with a first-set victory, taking the game 25-16. After each team swapped the first 12 points, the Loggers won seven points in a row with Marissa Florant serving. Florant tallied one ace in the stretch while Nicolette Reynaud earned three-straight kills to kick off the Loggers' run. After two George Fox points, the Loggers rolled off five more in a row thanks to a couple kills and two Jalene Toy service aces. With the score at 17-8 Puget Sound, the Loggers breezed to a victory in the set.

The second set was a bit more competitive as the Bruins won it 24-26. The set was full of point streaks as the Bruins had three streaks of at least four points and the Loggers had five of at least three points. George Fox hit .220 in the set while Puget Sound hit just .103. With the match tied one set apiece, the teams headed to the locker rooms for a 10-minute intermission.

The Loggers roared back after the break, winning the third set 25-6. The Loggers scored 11 points on the serve of Florant, extending a 5-3 game lead to a commanding16-3 one. Additionally, the set ended on a six-point UPS run. Puget Sound hit .325 in the third set, tallying 12 kills and benefiting from seven George Fox attack errors.

Puget Sound won the match with a 25-18 set victory in the fourth set. The Loggers tallied 16 kills in the set, with Jackie Harvey and Jordan Bird each tallying four. Additionally, the Loggers totaled six team blocks in the set alone, with Reynaud earning three blocks in the frame Emily Convery tallying two.

Harvey led all players with 13 kills, and both Harvey and Toy served up three aces. Christina Chun led the Loggers with 18 digs, and Reynaud blocked six shots on the night, the highest total of the year for the junior.

The Loggers (14-5, 9-1 NWC) will square off against the top-seeded team in the Northwest Conference, Pacific Lutheran, on Wednesday, Oct. 23. That patch will begin at 7:00 p.m. They also host Lewis & Clark next weekend, facing off against the Pioneers Friday, Oct. 25 at 7:00 p.m.
