Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. – Senior Jackie Harvey pounded down 17 kills and recorded 21 digs in a thrilling five-set win at Whitworth on Friday. Harvey was one of three Loggers to have at least 20 digs, led by 25 from Christina Chun.
It was a match full of highs and lows for both teams. The Loggers (9-5, 4-1 NWC) easily took the first two sets and the Pirates (9-8, 3-2 NWC) ran away with the third and fourth sets to force a fifth and deciding set. However, it was the Loggers who came away with the 25-16, 25-15, 20-25, 20-25, 15-13 win.
Both teams used early leads to key their initial set wins. The Loggers built a 10-3 lead in the first set and a 12-5 lead in the second set as they cruised to a 2-0 lead in the match.
With their backs against the wall, the hosts from Whitworth refused to go down quietly. They were held to .077 and -.031 hitting in the first and second sets, respectively, but hit at a .378 clip in the third set to claim their first set of the match.
The Loggers had hit .217 in the first set and .194 in the second set to build their lead.
The fourth set belonged all to the Bucs as they jumped out to a 10-2 lead and held off the Loggers to tie the match up at two sets a piece. The Pirates held the Loggers to -.089 hitting in the set as they ran away with the set.
The fifth set was tightly contested from start to finish with neither team pulling away. The two teams traded the first four points before the Loggers built up a three point lead. A couple Whitworth errors combined with a block from Emily Convery and Danielle Westerman led to a 4-2 lead. A Harvey kill made it 5-2 Loggers.
The Pirates fought back to tie the set at 7-7 on a kill from Nicole Leonard but continued to trade points with the Loggers. An ace from the Loggers' Jalene Toy put the Logger up 11-9 but Whitworth scored the next three points to reclaim the lead.
Jalana White slammed down her final of 14 kills on the night to put the Pirates up 13-12. However, Westerman tied things back up for the Loggers and back-to-back Whitworth hitting errors sealed their fate in the fifth set as the Loggers came away with the road win.
Jenni Brehove also had a double-double with 47 assists and 14 digs while Marissa Florant had 10 kills and 22 digs. Leonard also finished with 15 kills for Whitworth. Emily Convery was in on six blocks for the Loggers.
The Loggers head to Walla Walla, Wash. tomorrow for a 6 p.m. match with Whitman.
