Box Score TACOMA, Wash.—The University of Puget Sound women's soccer team won their second straight match Saturday, taking down the Whitworth Missionaries 1-0 at Peyton Field in Tacoma, Wash.
The Loggers (4-2-2, 2-1-2 NWC) controlled the ball for much of the first half, taking five shots towards the Whitman goal and limiting Whitman to just one. Puget Sound's Kylie Beeson fired a shot on target in the 9th minute, but the Missionaries' keeper Emily Davis made the save and kept match scoreless. Whitman didn't attempt a shot until 25 seconds before the end of the half, when Elyse Laurin fired towards the Logger goal. The Puget Sound defense blocked the shot, however, and the two teams entered halftime tied at zero.
Puget Sound broke through 10 minutes into the second half when Annie Jonsson took a rip, but was denied by Davis. Logger forward Robin Vieira was in position for the rebound, however, and put the ball in the back of the net for her first goal of the 2013 campaign.
Play evened out after the goal, with each side taking two shots apiece. Puget Sound keeper Lauren Thomas was forced to make one save in the 69th minute when Brianna Brown ripped a shot on goal to preserve the clean sheet.
Overall, the Loggers took eight shots during the game, with three of them on line with the goal. The Missionaries managed five shots, only one of them finding the frame. Puget Sound was called offside eight times, Whitman only once, and Whitman saved two shots as opposed to Puget Sound's one save. Fouls were 4-3 in favor of Whitman.
With the win, the Loggers find themselves in 6th place in the Northwest Conference, one point behind Whitman for 5th. Puget Sound faces Whitworth Sunday, October 6 at 12:00, again at Peyton Field, while Whitman takes on Pacific Lutheran in Parkland, Wash.
