Loggers score in double-overtime to advance in NCAAs

Box Score

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.—The University of Puget Sound women's soccer team played another nail-biter Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament, but they again came out ahead with a 1-0 double overtime victory over Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

The Loggers scored just over a minute into the second overtime period. Freshman Jill Shimabuku picked an opportune time to tally her first collegiate goal when she booted a corner kick from Jordyn McLuen into the Cal Lutheran net for the win. The shot by the midfielder was the first Logger attempt in either overtime as Cal Lutheran tallied the only shot in the first overtime period.

The match was forced into overtime after neither team could muster a goal in regulation. Both teams saw chances in the regulation 90 minutes as Cal Lutheran offered up nine shots in the first 90, four of which were on frame. Puget Sound attempted even more, putting six of their 11 regulation attempts on target.

The goalies did well to keep the scorebook clean, however. The Royals' Kristin Bailey made six saves in the loss, and Casey Thayer, the Loggers' starter between the pipes, made two saves in the first half. Thayer then made way for Lauren Thomas in the second, who made two more saves in second, preserving the clean sheet for the Logger defense.

In the 29th minute, the Loggers saw some decent chances to score. Alex Teesdale put a shot on frame only to see it saved by Bailey. Half a minute later, Teesdale again sent a shot in off a corner, only to see sail wide and out for a goal kick.

The Loggers also had two good chances late in the game. Grayson Williams-Krebs put an attempt on-frame in the 86th minute, only to see it saved by Bailey. Also, in the dying seconds of the match, Kylie Beeson found herself on a breakaway. Her shot found Bailey's gloves, however, and the match went into overtime.

After holding the Royals scoreless, the Loggers have now kept 15 clean sheets on the season, including in each of their last five matches. They've tallied a scoreless streak of 461 minutes, their second such streak lasting over 450 minutes this season.

With the win, the Loggers advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2007.  They will face Hardin-Simmons, who advanced with a 2-0 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Saturday, in the second round. That match will take place Sunday, Nov. 17 at 5:00 p.m., again in Thousand Oaks.
