Box Score TACOMA, Washington – Amalia Acorda-Fey scored two goals as the Puget Sound women's soccer team shutout Whitworth 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Acorda-Fey netted her fifth and sixth goals of the year in the first half. Three minutes into the game, Acorda-Fey fired in a cross from Jordyn McLuen. Just before halftime, Acorda-Fey struck again by finishing on end line passes from Annie Jonsson and Robin Vieira. In the 64th minute, Cassie Winter scored after Vieira's initial shot was saved and deflected. The Logger defense had a strong showing in the match by holding the Pirates without a shot through 55 minutes of play. Goalkeeper Lauren Thomas made two saves in the shutout win.
To begin the game, the first shot was a goal for Puget Sound (9-3, 7-2). Acorda-Fey finished a cross from McLuen. Throughout the remainder of the half the Loggers controlled the midfield and held possession of the ball as they took eight more shots. The strong Logger defense held Whitworth (4-9-1, 3-7) without a shot in the period. Acoda-Fey gave Puget Sound the 2-0 lead in the 41st minute by scoring on passes from Jonsson and Vieira.
Starting the second half up by two goals the Loggers continued to shut down Whitworth. In the 64th minute, Winter netted her third goal of the year. Vieira's initial shot was saved and deflected onto the foot of Winter, who sent it into the back of the net. Thomas made two saves in the match to secure the 3-0 shutout win over the Pirates.
The Loggers outshot the Pirates (19-2) and both teams recorded one corner kick. Acorda-Fey led the Loggers in shots with five.
Puget Sound hopes to carry this offensive momentum as it plays at home again tomorrow against Whitman at 12pm.
