Box Score TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound women's soccer team put up a strong fight but ultimately fell to Whitman 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Amalia Acorda-Fey led the Loggers in shots with two. In the second half, Puget Sound's offense pressed hard forward to take three shots including two that forced the Whitman goalkeeper to make saves. Logger goalkeeper, Lauren Thomas recorded two saves in the match.
In the first half, Puget Sound (6-2, 4-1 NWC) got off to a fast start with a shot wide left by Acorda-Fey. Whitman (6-2-2, 4-0-2) took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute as Danielle Wieck finished on a cross. Just before halftime, Jacquelyn Anderson took a high shot.
Starting the second half down by one, Annie Jonsson had a shot blocked by the Missionaries. Robin Vieira took a shot later in the period that was saved by the Whitman goalkeeper. Thomas made two crucial saves in the half that kept the Loggers within reach of Whitman. Acorda-Fey took a shot in the last five minutes but Puget Sound's effort was not enough as it fell 1-0.
The Missionaries outshot the Loggers (9-5) and had more corner kicks (5-0).
Puget Sound looks to turn it around tomorrow, Sunday Oct. 5 as it takes on Whitworth in Spokane, Wash. at 12 pm.
