Box Score TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound women's soccer team kept itself in contention for first place in the Northwest Conference on Friday morning with a commanding 3-0 win over Pacific.
The Loggers found the back of the net early in the match with Amalia Acorda-Fey's ninth goal of the season. In the sixth minute, she finished on a pass from Jacquelyn Anderson. In the second half, Emma Donckels scored her second header goal of the year. Haley Rosenberg took a corner kick in the 57th minute that found the head of Donckels. To wrap up the scoring for the Loggers, Annie Jonsson crossed the ball through the 18 yard box to Anderson in the 61st minute. Anderson fired the ball passed the Boxer goalkeeper from 20 yards out for her second goal of the season.
Defensively, Puget Sound (14-4, 12-3 NWC) held Pacific (6-12-1, 3-11-1 NWC) to only one shot in the match. The Logger defense of Liz Blonden, Donckels, Bailey Edwards and Jordyn McLuen thwarted all the Boxer chances. Goalkeeper Lauren Thomas recorded her 10th shutout of the year.
The first half was dominated from the start by Puget Sound. In the first seven minute of the match six different players took shots including Acorda-Fey who scored the early goal for the Loggers. Nearly notching goals as well were Jonsson, McLuen and Robin Vieira who had shots saved by the Pacific goalkeeper Kristina Morris.
Puget Sound started the second half up by one goal. The Boxers came out fighting as Sydney Virgen took their only shot of the match in the 50th minute. The shot was blocked by the Logger defense. In the 57th and 61st minutes, Puget Sound sealed the win with goals from Donckels and Anderson.
The Loggers outshot the Boxers (23-1) and had more corner kicks (7-2). Vieira led the Loggers in shots with five.
In the final home match of the season, Puget Sound hosts Lewis & Clark tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 8 at 11am.
