Box Score WAVERLY, Iowa – The University of Puget Sound women's soccer team defeated Augustana 2-0 in the opening round of the NCAA tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The Loggers (17-0-4, 12-0-4 NWC) and Vikings (15-5-1, 5-1-1 CCIW) played a fairly even first half, with each team feeling the other out. The two teams each had five shots, including two shots on goal in the first half.
In the second half, the Loggers began settling into the game, and pressuring Augustana. Puget Sound played the majority of the period in the attacking third, except for a few counter attacks by the Vikings. In the 70th minute, Puget Sound took the 1-0 lead. Danielle Silver beat her defender by the corner flag and crossed the ball to the front of the goal. Amalia Acorda-Fey, the Northwest Conference 2015 Offensive Player of the Year, rose to meet the cross with her head, finding the back of the net for the 14th time this year.
The Loggers struck again in the 82nd minute. Bailey Edwards collected a corner kick on the far edge of the box and served a cross back in front of the net. Lura Morton headed the ball between the Viking goalie and a defender for her 2nd goal of the season.
Puget Sound outshot Augustana 16-9. The Vikings took more corner kicks than the Loggers (4-3). Amalia Acorda-Fey and Jacquelyn Anderson led the team with three shots, while goalkeeper Lauren Thomas (17-0-4) made six saves.
The team will next play host Wartburg on Sunday, November 15. The game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (PST). The Knights defeated St. Scholastica 1-0 earlier on Saturday.
