Box Score NEWBERG, Oregon – The No. 15-ranked Puget Sound women's soccer team defeated George Fox 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. The team needs a win or a tie on Sunday to clinch its 14th-consecutive Northwest Conference title.
The Loggers (15-0-4, 11-0-4 NWC) took control from the opening whistle. The team only allowed one George Fox (5-12-2, 3-11-1 NWC) shot in the first half. Puget Sound almost took the early lead in the sixth minute when a shot by Emma Donckels was saved off the crossbar.
In the 23rd minute, Amalia Acorda-Fey made a run into the box and was brought down by a Bruins defender. Acorda-Fey calmly stepped to the penalty spot and slotted home her 13th goal of the year, and eighth game-winner.
Puget Sound kept the pressure on in the second half, continuing to play in their attacking third for the majority of the game. Despite a ten-minute period in which George Fox pressed forward for a goal, the Logger defense stayed stout, earning their 16th clean sheet of the season.
The Loggers outshot George Fox 13-3, and also took more corner kicks (11-1). Acorda-Fey led Puget Sound with four shots, while goalkeeper Lauren Thomas (15-0-4) earned the victory, extending her scoreless streak to nine games.
Dating back to last fall, the Loggers are unbeaten in 22 consecutive regular-season games. Puget Sound will next play Willamette on Sunday, November 8. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
