Women's soccer clinches NWC title in defeat of Willamette

Box Score

SALEM, Oregon – The No. 15-ranked Puget Sound women's soccer team clinched its 14th consecutive Northwest Conference title when they defeated Willamette 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The Loggers (16-0-4, 12-0-4 NWC), needing a win or a tie to clinch the title, pushed forward from the start of the game. In the 12th minute Puget Sound took the advantage. Jacquelyn Anderson received the ball at the top corner of the box and rocketed her shot far post past the reach of the Bearcats (9-9-2, 9-6-1 NWC) keeper.

Puget Sound continued to press in the second half. They broke through again in the 76th minute, increasing their lead to 2-0. Danielle Silver found Liz Blonden making a run down the right flank. Blonden then crossed the ball to the top of the six-yard box, where Anderson found the back of the net for her second goal of the game.

The Loggers outshot Willamette 17-4, including by a 10-2 mark in the first period. Puget Sound also took more corner kicks (8-0). Anderson led Puget Sound with five shots, while goalkeeper Lauren Thomas (16-0-4) earned the victory, extending her scoreless streak to ten games.

Dating back to last fall, the Loggers are unbeaten in 23 consecutive regular-season games. They finished the regular season on a 10-game winning streak. The Puget Sound defense only allowed three goals, the last coming against Linfield October 4.

By winning the conference title, Puget Sound earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Championships. They find out their opponent Monday, November 9 at 10 a.m. The Selection Show will stream at ncaa.com.
