Women's soccer battles to scoreless draw with Lutes

PARKLAND, Washington – The University of Puget Sound women's soccer team tied cross-town rival Pacific Lutheran University 0-0 in the Loggers' Northwest Conference opener on Wednesday afternoon.

The Loggers (4-0-1) and Lutes (4-0-1) entered the game with identical records, and 110 minutes could not separate the teams. The first half was even, with each squad taking four shots. Coming out of halftime, Puget Sound took control of the game, outshooting Pacific Lutheran in the second half, 8-3. However, neither team was unable to break through, and the game went to overtime.

The Loggers dominated the overtime periods, outshooting the Lutes 8-3, including one shot by Danielle Silver that caromed off the crossbar. When the final whistle blew, the two teams remained locked in a scoreless tie.

Puget Sound outshot PLU (20-10), while Pacific Lutheran took more corner kicks (5-1). Amalia Acorda-Fey and Silver led the team with four shots, while goalkeeper Lauren Thomas (4-0-1) made four saves. Thomas now has four shutouts in 2015.

Puget Sound's next match will be Saturday, September 19, when they host Lewis & Clark. The game is set to kickoff at 12 p.m. at Peyton Field.
