Box Score SPOKANE, Washington – Facing a 2-0 deficit on the road, the Puget Sound volleyball team rallied to stun Whitworth, 3-2, (12-25, 19-25, 28-26, 25-23, 16-14) on Friday night. The Loggers extended their winning streak to eight games.
Following losses in the first two sets, the Loggers (10-3, 5-0 NWC) fought back with a 28-26 win in the third set. A kill by Hannah Stinson gave the Loggers a 21-20 edge, but the Pirates (10-4, 4-1 NWC) quickly grabbed a 23-22 lead. Whitworth was poised to win the match with a 25-24 advantage, but a service error by the Pirates extended the match.
Aided by a trio of Whitworth attack errors and an ace by Renee Keneally, the Loggers went on a 6-0 run to take an 11-5 lead in the fourth set. Although the Pirates made it close, Puget Sound held on to the lead for the rest of the set. The Pirates pulled to within 24-23, but the set ended on an attack error by Whitworth.
Another service error gave the Loggers a 27-26 lead, and Shelby Kantner put the set away for the Loggers with a kill.
Kristen Lane and Erika Smith posted kills late in the fifth set to push the Loggers to victory.
Whitworth attacked at a higher clip, .246 to Puget Sound's .161. The Loggers' big play at the net, 12 total blocks to the Pirates' five, was a key factor in the win.
Puget Sound looks to add to its win streak at Whitman on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 5 p.m.
