Box Score TACOMA, Washington – Jacquelyn Anderson netted the game-winning goal and Lauren Thomas posted her second shutout of the year as the Puget Sound women's soccer team opened Northwest Conference play with a 2-0 win over Whitman on Peyton Field Saturday afternoon.
Annie Prickett launched a long cross from the right side to find Anderson on the far post, and the junior buried her second goal of the season into the upper left corner on one touch in the ninth minute.
The Loggers (4-1, 1-0 NWC) held on to the one-goal lead entering halftime, but Grayson Williams-Krebs gave Puget Sound an insurance goal early in the second half. Anderson battled Whitman (0-4, 0-1 NWC) defenders on the right side before sliding a cross to Williams-Krebs near the top of the 18-yard box. Williams-Krebs then buried a shot into the lower left corner just over three minutes into the second half.
Thomas needed just three saves for her second shutout of the season.
The Loggers finished with 17 shots in the game, 11 of which came in the first half. In all, Puget Sound put nine shots on goal. The Loggers also finished with an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Puget Sound returns to action at home against Whitworth on Sunday, Sept. 12, at 12 p.m. on Peyton Field.
